What is BharatGen?
BharatGen is a path-breaking government- sponsored project designed under the National Mission on interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical System (NM-ICPS). It’s being executed through the TIH Foundation for IoT and IoE at IIT Bombay with active facilitation from the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
This AI model is capable of understanding and generating content in 22 Indian languages, combining text, speech, and image modalities. In simple terms, BharatGen will make it easier for AI systems to speak, read, write, and understand multiple Indian languages—bringing true linguistic inclusivity to AI.
Why BharatGen is a Game-Changer
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh called BharatGen a “national mission” aimed at creating AI that is ethical, inclusive, and deeply rooted in Indian values. He said:
“This initiative will empower key sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, offering region-specific AI solutions that understand and serve every Indian.”
The Minister cited an inspiring example from his own constituency, where AI-powered telemedicine enables virtual consultations in local dialects. “It not only builds trust,” he said, “but acts like a placebo, improving outcomes in remote areas.”
Aligning with PM Modi’s Vision of “India’s Techade”
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that BharatGen is in sync with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a tech-driven India, or what he calls “India’s Techade.” From multilingual feedback systems on public platforms like CPGRAMS to inclusive education reforms under NEP 2020, BharatGen is meant to touch the lives of every Indian.
He also pointed to flagship schemes like:
- PM MUDRA Yojana
- PM SVANidhi
- PM Vishwakarma Yojana
…as critical enablers of grassroots innovation and entrepreneurship that BharatGen can amplify using AI.

Innovation from Fields to Frameworks
Dr. Singh lauded the success of more than 3,000 Agri-Tech startups, especially those in states such as Jammu and Kashmir supporting niche farming practices like the growing of lavender. He pointed out that innovation is not only in metros or IT towns and BharatGen will be a significant contributor towards regional entrepreneurship.
MoUs, Collaborations & A Nationwide AI Network
The summit witnessed a major MoU exchange ceremony, bringing together various government departments and research hubs. BharatGen is being executed through a vast network of 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs), with 4 already upgraded to Technology Translational Research Parks (TTRPs).
The initiative stands on four strong pillars:
- Technology Development
- Entrepreneurship
- Human Resource Development
- International Collaboration
AI Hackathon 2025: Igniting Young Minds
The launch of the Generative AI Hackathon 2025 was another key highlight, aimed at engaging students across the country to solve real-world problems using AI. This hands-on challenge will help cultivate the next generation of AI leaders from across India.
