I’ll be honest, there’s something about seeing Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan together again that hits right in the feels. I still remember the first time I watched Freaky Friday back in 2003 – the chaos, the laughs, the way it made me want to hug my mom right after. Now, with Freakier Friday finally in theatres, it feels like meeting an old friend after years apart… only to realise they’ve still got the same spark but a whole new story to tell.
Jamie Lee Curtis herself put it perfectly on Instagram when she called the cast and crew her “little group of freaks” who came together to make a story about love, family, empathy, understanding, and yes – even arthritis and Gen Z angst. Reading her words, you can sense the nostalgia, but also the pure joy of making something for the next generation while honouring what made the original a classic.
A Reunion That Feels Like Coming Home

When Freakier Friday was announced, it was Curtis who picked up the phone to Disney after years of fans asking her for a sequel. And thank goodness she did. This isn’t just a quick nostalgia cash-in – it’s a proper reunion, with familiar faces like Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao returning alongside the leads.
And then there’s the new generation: Sophia Hammons and Julia Butters, who bring fresh energy to the Coleman family. The plot’s deliciously chaotic – Lohan’s Anna is now a single mom to Butters’ Harper, preparing to marry Eric (Manny Jacinto), whose daughter is played by Hammons. But when the teen girls suddenly find themselves in the bodies of Curtis and Lohan, they decide to team up… to break up their parents. Cue body-swap mayhem, misunderstandings, and plenty of emotional beats.
A Story That Speaks to Then and Now
What I love about Freakier Friday is that it doesn’t try to be a carbon copy of the 2003 hit. It keeps the heart and the humour, but adds layers for today’s audience. There’s music, mayhem, and moments that will make you laugh through tears. It’s soaked in maternal love, but also tackles the awkwardness, frustration, and messiness of blending families.
Curtis mentioned in her post that they “laughed, cried, laughed again” while making the film – and you can tell. The chemistry between old and new cast members feels genuine, and director Nisha Ganatra balances slapstick comedy with moments that tug at your heartstrings. The PG rating makes it perfect for families, while Gen Z viewers will catch the sharper, modern touches in the dialogue and music choices.
Behind the Scenes – More Than Just a Movie Set
Curtis’ Instagram post came with a flood of behind-the-scenes photos – smiling faces, in-between takes, and little glimpses of the camaraderie that clearly fuelled the shoot. It’s rare to see such genuine affection in a cast, but this one clearly clicked. That warmth bleeds into every scene, making it easy to get swept up in the story, even if you already know the body-swap formula.
From what I’ve seen, even the press tour has been dripping in nostalgia – with Lindsay Lohan subtly nodding to her original costumes, Chad Michael Murray sharing fun throwback stories, and the entire cast embracing the fans who grew up on the original. It’s marketing, sure, but it also feels like they’re letting us be part of the reunion.
Release Details – Mark Your Calendar

For Indian audiences, Freakier Friday releases on 7 August 2025, running for 111 minutes of pure chaos and heart. It’s a Comedy, Family, Fantasy film rated PG for mild coarse language – so yes, it’s one you can watch with your parents, your kids, or just by yourself with a tub of popcorn and a warm fuzzy feeling.
The story takes place years after Tess and Anna’s first identity crisis, now with Anna navigating motherhood and Tess learning that lightning really can strike twice. And while we’ve seen countless reboots and sequels in recent years, this one has that rare thing – sincerity.
