What Happened?
Last month, Colombia had released a statement on May 8, offering “heartfelt condolences” to Pakistan after India carried out precision strikes on terror camps along the border in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack.
The statement evoked consternation in New Delhi since India has a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism and perceives the strikes as acts of self-defense.
India Responds Through Diplomacy
On Saturday, Shashi Tharoor disclosed that at a high-level meeting with Colombia Vice Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, India expressed its profound discontent with the previous statement.
“I expressed India’s view of recent events and voiced disappointment at Colombia’s statement. The Minister assured me that the statement had been withdrawn and that our position was now properly understood and strongly supported,” Tharoor posted on X.
Colombia Backs India’s Right to Self-Defense
India’s all-party delegation, comprising members of parliament from across political divisions, conducted a series of diplomatic interactions in Bogotá. And the message was unequivocal: Colombia recognized India’s security concerns and gave complete backing to its right to defend sovereignty and fight terrorism.
The Indian Embassy in Colombia also confirmed the development, stating:
“The Colombian side responded positively to India’s firm policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and its proactive counter-terror approach.”
Parliament-Level Talks: Growing Support
The Indian delegation met with key Colombian lawmakers, including:
- MP Alejandro Toro, President of the Second Commission of the Chamber of Representatives
- MP Jaime Raul Salamanca, President of the Chamber
Both leaders expressed strong support for India’s right to defend its territory and pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism.

Strategic Talks at Colombia Council on International Relations
In a wide-ranging discussion with Colombia’s Council on International Relations, the Indian delegation explored:
- India’s evolving geopolitical role
- Economic cooperation with Latin America
- Security and strategic partnerships
Tharoor described the dialogue as a “delightful lunch discussion with thought leaders” and emphasized the importance of India–Colombia ties in a changing global landscape.
A Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in Bogotá
The delegation also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Tadeo University, where Tharoor reflected on Gandhiji’s enduring influence:
“A poignant moment reflecting on his legacy of peace & non-violence, so relevant in our world.”
What’s Next?
Having left Colombia, the Indian Parliamentary delegation will head to Brazil before ending their journey in the US. The diplomatic trip serves to emphasize India’s efforts to lead international opinion and explain its actions following Operation Sindoor.
