I have always believed that the journey to Mata Vaishno Devi is more than just a pilgrimage. It is a prayer that people walk with their hearts, carrying faith and hope in every step on the Trikuta hills. That’s why when the tragic news of the August 26 cloudburst and landslide struck, leaving 34 devotees dead and 18 injured, it felt like a wound on the soul of every devotee. The sacred route to the shrine at Adhkuwari suddenly turned into a scene of sorrow, shaking countless families who had placed their faith in Mata’s protection.

Shrine Board’s Clarification on the Tragedy

In the days that followed, some media reports accused the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) of ignoring weather advisories and allowing the yatra to proceed despite risks. However, the Board has firmly denied these allegations, calling them false and baseless. In its statement, the Shrine Board said that the yatra had actually been suspended at noon on August 26, hours before the sudden cloudburst triggered the landslide.
According to officials, weather conditions were clear in the morning, with even helicopter services operating smoothly until 10 am. It was only when forecasts of moderate rains came in that fresh registrations were suspended, and pilgrims were guided to safe shelters or directed back to Katra.
Disaster Strikes Near Inderprastha Bhojanalaya
The tragedy unfolded near Inderprastha Bhojanalaya on the old track, a route considered generally safe and stable for decades. At around 2:40 pm, nature’s fury struck in the form of a sudden, intense cloudburst. Within minutes, it triggered a massive landslide that tore through a 50-metre stretch of the track. The Shrine Board has emphasized that this was an unprecedented incident, one that could not have been predicted or foreseen. No record of such a landslide in this area exists in the past.
Safety Measures and Rescue Operations
The Shrine Board has stressed that elaborate safety measures were in place, including deployment of its Disaster Management Task Force, enforcement staff, and close monitoring of weather updates. When the landslide occurred, rescue teams from SMVDSB, the District Administration of Reasi, J&K Police, CRPF, Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers immediately rushed in for evacuation and relief.
Eighteen injured pilgrims were given first aid on the track before being shifted to the Shrine Board’s Super Specialty Hospital in Kakryal. Stranded pilgrims were later escorted safely to Katra through Tarakote Marg by the evening of the same day. Simultaneously, debris clearance and slope stabilisation efforts were carried out on war footing.
Faith Amid Sorrow
For many, the journey to Mata Vaishno Devi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, one filled with devotion and emotion. To see it end in tragedy is heartbreaking. But as the Shrine Board has said, the event was a force majeure—something beyond human control. They have reiterated that pilgrim safety has always been their foremost priority, and in this case, every possible precaution was taken in line with weather forecasts.
The Board has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and has promised full support and assistance to the bereaved families. Injured pilgrims continue to receive the best possible medical treatment, and prayers have been offered for their recovery.
A Prayer for Strength
As someone who has seen the devotion of countless yatris making this sacred journey, I can only imagine the grief of those families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. The Mata Vaishno Devi yatra tragedy is a reminder of both the fragility of life and the unshakable strength of faith. While nature’s unpredictability may shake us, it cannot weaken the devotion that binds millions of hearts to Mata Rani.
