When Nature Turns Merciless in Chamoli

I have often heard people say that the mountains of Uttarakhand are heaven on earth. But last night, that heaven turned into a nightmare for many families in Chamoli. The rain that poured down through the night wasn’t just water, it was fear, it was helplessness. In Tharali town, the once dry Tunri Gadhera canal overflowed, bringing with it mud, stones, and debris that rushed into homes, markets, and even the tehsil office before joining the Pindar River.
As I try to imagine the chaos, I can almost see families rushing to safety while their belongings are swallowed by the gushing debris. This is not just a weather update; it’s a reminder of how fragile life in the hills can be.

Key Roads Closed, Town Cut Off
The disaster has not only destroyed homes but also crippled connectivity. The Karnaprayag–Gwaldam National Highway, a lifeline for the region, has been closed after heavy debris piled up near Ming Gadhera. The Tharali–Sagwara road and the Dungri motor road are also blocked, cutting off villages from immediate relief.
For residents, roads in Uttarakhand are more than just a route; they connect them to hospitals, schools, and markets. With these key links blocked, it feels like the region has been pushed into isolation overnight. Even the teams of SDRF and police, dispatched immediately, have been delayed because they too are stuck on blocked roads.
Two People Still Missing Amid the Chaos
What makes the tragedy even heavier is the news of missing persons. A young 20-year-old woman named Kavita from Sagwara and another person from Chepdon are still untraceable. Their families are clinging to hope, waiting for news that they are safe.
I can’t help but feel the pain of those families. In a small town where everyone knows each other, such disappearances leave the entire community grieving. While officials have assured that search and rescue operations are underway, time feels slower and crueler for those waiting.
Government and Administration on Alert
Chamoli’s Additional District Magistrate Vivek Prakash confirmed that heavy damage has been reported in Tharali and nearby areas. The administration has already begun setting up relief camps for those who lost their homes. District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari left early morning to personally monitor the situation.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the destruction and assured people through a social media post that he is personally monitoring the situation. His words—“I pray to God for everyone’s safety”—reflect the helplessness even leaders feel when nature unleashes its fury.
Schools Closed, Lives Disrupted
In an urgent step, schools in three development blocks were ordered shut on Saturday. For children, it means missing out on classes again, but for parents, it is relief that their little ones are safe at home. For traders in Tharali market, however, the losses are unimaginable, as debris has buried their shops and livelihoods overnight.
This disaster comes only weeks after a cloudburst in Uttarkashi killed one person and left at least 65 missing, showing how Uttarakhand continues to face nature’s wrath year after year.
A State That Lives Between Beauty and Fear
Living in Uttarakhand is like living between two extremes—the beauty of snow-clad peaks and the constant fear of rain turning into a disaster. Chamoli’s tragedy is yet another chapter in the state’s ongoing struggle with cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides. Dharali in Uttarkashi was buried under mudslides only weeks ago, and now Chamoli is struggling with its own wounds.
As someone who has visited the hills, I know how peaceful they feel on a sunny day. But today, that peace is gone, replaced with stories of loss, bravery, and survival.
