BOGOTA/NEW DELHI, May 31: In a key diplomatic breakthrough, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor revealed that Colombia has officially rescinded its previous statement expressing condolences to Pakistan following the recent military confrontations with India. The step follows intense diplomatic efforts by the Indian delegation, headed by Tharoor, who is on a tour of five countries to strengthen India’s standing in the international community following Operation Sindoor.

On Saturday, Shashi Tharoor disclosed that at a high-level meeting with Colombia Vice Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, India expressed its profound discontent with the previous statement.
“I expressed India’s view of recent events and voiced disappointment at Colombia’s statement. The Minister assured me that the statement had been withdrawn and that our position was now properly understood and strongly supported,” Tharoor posted on X.
Colombia Backs India’s Right to Self-Defense
India’s all-party delegation, comprising members of parliament from across political divisions, conducted a series of diplomatic interactions in Bogotá. And the message was unequivocal: Colombia recognized India’s security concerns and gave complete backing to its right to defend sovereignty and fight terrorism.
The Indian Embassy in Colombia also confirmed the development, stating:
“The Colombian side responded positively to India’s firm policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and its proactive counter-terror approach.”

- MP Jaime Raul Salamanca, President of the Chamber

The delegation also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Tadeo University, where Tharoor reflected on Gandhiji’s enduring influence:
