With a major update to its bestselling SUV range, Toyota India has introduced the highly awaited Toyota Fortuner mild hybrid, named Neo Drive, featuring a price tag of RS44.72 lakh(ex-showroom). It is the first-ever Fortuner model featuring 48v mild-hybrid technology, which is intended to enhance fuel efficiency, performance, and lower emissions while preserving the tough Fortuner DNA.

Let’s sort out what’s new, what’s enhanced, and why this Neo Drive model might be the better purchase.

What Is the Neo Drive Technology?

The Neo Drive badge, already used on models such as the Hyryder and Glanza, is Toyota’s identifier for its mild-hybrid offerings. In the Fortuner, it now adds a 48V hybrid assist system paired with the same 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine (204hp, 500Nm).

This system includes:

  • A belt-integrated starter generator (BSG)
  • A small lithium-ion battery
  • DC-DC converter
  • Regenerative braking system
  • Smart Idle Start-Stop

Official Statement

“The new Neo Drive 48V grade marks yet another milestone in our journey. As a segment-first, it reinforces Toyota’s commitment to sustainability and delivering ever-better cars,”
Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, Toyota India

Is Fortuner Neo Drive Worth the Premium?

If you’re a fan of the Fortuner but want slightly better mileage, smoother drives, and a small step toward a greener future, the Neo Drive variants offer a compelling choice. Yes, they’re ₹2 lakh pricier, but for buyers in this segment, that’s a reasonable trade-off for upgraded tech and efficiency.

Final Thoughts

With increasing fuel prices and tougher emission standards, Toyota’s decision to hybridize the Fortuner is both timely and well-comed. As much as we still desire more premium features in this range, the Neo Drive launch paves the way for an environmentally friendly SUV future in India.
